What’s the difference between yoga and Yoga Therapy?

Although yoga as a practice can be therapeutic there are significant differences between a yoga class and a yoga therapy session.

A yoga class encompasses movement, pranayama and meditation alongside spiritual practice depending on which style of yoga you chose. Although yoga classes may assist in aiding relaxation, Yoga therapy bridges the gap between practice and treatment.

Yoga Therapy combines the worlds of yoga with neuroscience and psychology. It translates neuroscientific research into practice, whilst offering the support of psychotherapeutic holding, empowering individuals to progress towards improved health and wellbeing.

Therapy is a collaborative process between a therapist and client, and the establishment of an effective therapeutic alliance is key in assisting the healing and recovery process. A therapy session is client-centred allowing you to safely explore your individual needs. This may include integration of tools such as movement, mindfulness and breath work.

Our yoga therapy covers a range of yoga techniques including yoga for anxiety, yoga for breathwork and movement, yoga for depression and yoga to help all kinds of existing conditions.

  • Yoga Therapists undergo a minimum of 580 hours of intense study, examinations and clinical assessments.
  • Yoga Therapists are trained to work with individuals experiencing chronic health and mental health conditions.
  • Yoga Therapy recognises the impact of trauma (PTSD,ARDS, CPTSD) on the body, and works from a trauma-sensitive approach.
